Artificial Insemination in Dogs: What Breeders Should Know

Artificial insemination (AI) has become an increasingly popular and effective method for dog breeders looking to expand bloodlines, improve success rates, or overcome geographic limitations. At North Oatlands Animal Hospital and Reproduction Center, we provide comprehensive AI services using fresh, chilled, or frozen semen, all supported by our advanced diagnostics and reproductive expertise.
There are many reasons a breeder might choose artificial insemination over natural mating. In some cases, the stud dog may be located in another part of the country—or even internationally. AI eliminates the need for travel and the stress that comes with transporting animals. It’s also an excellent option for dogs who have trouble mating naturally due to behavioral issues, age, or physical limitations.
We offer three types of AI at NOAH: vaginal insemination, transcervical insemination (TCI), and surgical insemination. Vaginal insemination is the least invasive and works well when using fresh semen in fertile females. TCI is performed using a special endoscope that allows us to deposit semen directly into the uterus without the need for anesthesia. Surgical insemination, though more invasive, allows precise placement of frozen or poor-quality semen under general anesthesia, especially when timing and success rates are critical.
Timing is everything in artificial insemination. That’s why we pair our AI services with progesterone testing, ultrasound, and semen evaluation to ensure we inseminate at the optimal moment. Our goal is to increase conception success and reduce the number of repeat breedings needed.
Our experienced team will walk you through every step of the process—from timing and semen shipment to insemination and pregnancy monitoring. Whether you’re using semen from your own stud dog or receiving it from a frozen bank, we’ll help coordinate the logistics to ensure everything goes smoothly.
