Neonatal Puppy & Kitten Care: The First 8 Weeks

The first eight weeks of life are some of the most important—and most fragile—for newborn puppies and kittens. These early days require constant attention, proper nutrition, and a keen eye for early warning signs of illness. At North Oatlands Animal Hospital and Reproduction Center, we provide breeders with the support, education, and emergency care needed to navigate this critical period successfully.

Neonatal animals are completely dependent on their mothers—or their caretakers. Their immune systems are not fully developed, and they rely heavily on colostrum, the nutrient-rich first milk produced by the mother, to receive passive immunity. Ensuring all puppies or kittens nurse within the first few hours after birth is essential to their survival.

Sometimes, however, complications arise. A mother may reject her litter, struggle with milk production, or experience post-birth complications that interfere with nursing. In these cases, breeders need to intervene quickly with bottle or tube feeding. We help by offering guidance on proper formulas, feeding schedules, and hygiene practices to minimize the risk of aspiration pneumonia and digestive issues.

We also help breeders track growth using weight charts and behavioral milestones. Healthy puppies and kittens should gain weight steadily, stay warm, and begin developing motor control within the first few weeks. A sudden drop in weight, constant crying, or inactivity can signal underlying problems that require immediate attention.

At NOAH, we provide comprehensive wellness checks for both the dam and the newborns. We monitor for signs of postpartum infections, mastitis, and uterine complications in the mother while ensuring the litter is nursing well and growing at an appropriate pace.

As the weeks progress, we support the weaning process and provide recommendations on transitioning to solid food. We can also help you schedule vaccinations and deworming at the appropriate time so that each puppy or kitten is protected as they prepare to go to new homes.

For breeders, the first few weeks are filled with joy, but also uncertainty. We’re here to make sure you’re never alone during those early mornings and unexpected challenges.
