Reptile Medicine

The category of reptiles includes tortoises/turtles, iguanas, bearded dragons, chameleons, lizards, and snakes. They can all make great, fascinating pets—but they must be properly cared for!

It is common for reptilian pets to suffer from malnutrition due to an inadequate diet. This is not because of intentional owner neglect but because of a lack of knowledge regarding what these animals need to thrive. Lack of proper living conditions and environment is also vital for these animals.

It is important that you bring your reptile pets in for annual check-ups so we can help you provide the best care possible. Since it’s difficult to see and diagnose illness and health issues affecting reptiles, these annual exams allow us to establish a baseline health for your pet and detect changes over time. We recommend bringing your pet to us in its enclosure so that we can offer you tips about how to optimize their living conditions and ensure they are getting what they need to have a happy and healthy life.

Because signs of illness and injury in reptiles are often subtle, you should be aware of symptoms and bring your pet in to see us if you notice:

  • Changing in eating or drinking habits
  • Shedding problems
  • Swelling/bumps/lumps
  • Changes in urine or stool production
  • Change in energy level
  • Change in general appearance
  • Limping or lameness
  • Changes in posture
  • Breathing problems
  • Bubbles from nostrils or eyes
  • Inability to open eyes
  • Swollen eyes
  • Oral Lesions
